To film the promotional video for Deerfield’s 2026 Be Worthy Campaign, a prop team recreated a mock-’80s common room set-up inside Harold Smith, propping up antique wooden skis and lacrosse sticks as decoration, rolling out colorful rugs and draping knit blankets on the gray common room couch — anything that might call to a nostalgic alum.

In September 1902, Frank Boyden took over as headmaster of a version of Deerfield with only 14 students from local farmers. Within the local community, he promoted the idea that every child should have an education, and he invited more surrounding farmers’ children to Deerfield.

On July 16, Hugging Face, an open-source platform for collaboration on artificial intelligence and machine learning, announced that it had been hacked. The perpetrator was not a human hacker with malicious intent, but an OpenAI model trying to perform well on a sandbox cybersecurity exploitation assessment.

At Deerfield, we remember not the people who were average during their respective times in history but those who were radical — culture-changing, forward-looking citizens, whether it’s Benjamin Franklin, MLK Jr. or Gloria Steinem. Continuing on this theme, I wish to explore how our memories affect our opinion-making and reflections on humanity’s past.
