90 SECONDS with Mr. Morris

JONATHAN XU/DEERFIELD SCROLL

Q: Is there an interesting fact that people would be surprised to know about you?!
A: Well, of course, being a classic English teacher. I mean, to be honest, most students probably don’t know most things about me.
Q: Tell us the real truth about teaching ninth graders.
A: Ninth grade is the most fun class to teach because they grow the most. You get to see so much improvement over the course of the year. Genuinely fun.
Q: What’s your favorite tradition at Deerfield?
A: I’m very interested in the way that Deerfield is so fixated on traditions… The tradition of traditions is the thing that is most interesting to me.
Q: Would you rather smell with your right foot or your left?
A: Probably left… I think my right foot takes more of a beating. I think my left foot is probably a little more available for that kind of sensory experience.
Q: What’s your favorite word in the English dictionary?!
A: This is not actually my favorite word, but it’s a word that I was delighted by today. My daughter is two years old now, so she’s acquiring language very quickly. She said “also” for the first time, rather than saying “two,” which she’s been saying for ages. I’m interested in “also.”
